Cardinals’ Oliver Marmol breaks silence on umpires after shocking ejection from Brewers game

The St. Louis Cardinals pulled off the win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. However, all of the attention is on Oliver Marmol after his surprising ejection midway through the contest. Now, Marmol breaks his silence about what transpired in Sunday’s game.

As it turns out, Oliver Marmol has no hard feelings toward the umpires. Instead, the Cardinals manager praised the umpires and claimed he went ballistic to light a fire under his team, according to ESPN.

“Alan Porter and Sean Barber are good umpires. That had more to do with getting something going. Those guys do a nice job. Their job is tough. But at times, you’ve just got to — a little skid — get something going. I don’t have anything against that group.”

It seemingly worked, as the Cardinals strung together three unanswered runs after Oliver Marmol’s ejection, giving St. Louis a 4-3 win over the Brewers. It was quite the scene though, as Marmol was heated and got in the umpire’s face.

Sunday’s win was much needed for the Cardinals. They’re currently ranked dead last in the National League Central but are just eight games back behind the Brewers. It’s been a slow start for St. Louis but they can get back at the top of the rankings if they go on a hot streak. But only time will tell if this team can be competitive as the season progresses.

How the Cardinals can right the ship

The Cardinals don’t necessarily have the best depth and they’re also dealing with several injuries. Missing guys like Tommy Edman, Wilson Contreras, and Drew Rom are less than ideal. But for now, St. Louis has to figure it out without them. With that said, one area this team can improve is at the plate.

There are plenty of talented hitters in the lineup with Nolan Arenado leading the way. Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman are also great options at the plate, with Gorman being one of the team’s top prospects. But when it comes down to it, improving the offense is necessary for the Cardinals to go on a serious run.

The pitching rotation could certainly improve but the Cardinals would be better off finding the pitchers they need in free agency. Especially considering the front office would likely have to give up at least one of their top prospect position players. So, it’s more likely they maintain their roster for this season.

When it comes down to it the Cardinals are likely a year or two from becoming playoff contenders. But if the offense can get rolling and offer some support for the pitchers then St. Louis could make some noise later on in the season. There are plenty of games ahead and this roster has the chance to go on a hot streak at some point. If they do, they could surprisingly climb the rankings.
